Congratulations to Chris Felgate

I would like to congratulate Chris Felgate for his great performance at the Olympics today. Chris finished 42nd in the Mens Triathlon event, which was only five odd minutes behind the winner of the race. I had the pleasure of chatting to Chris on Sunday before his race and wishing him the best of luck. I told Chris to bring home the gold but he said to me that his aim was for a top 50 finish. And as I sit here and type this out today, a tear of happiness comes down my eye as I am overly happy for Chris and that he has achieved his goal of finishing in the Top 50. For me, this is as good as a Gold. When one achieves their goals, what more can you ask for? Chris has worked extremely hard for this and he deserves all the congratulations he gets.

You have made us really proud Chris and I am sure you are going to be back in 2012 for the Olympics in London and set yourself another goal you will achieve. Now after that near 2 hour long event you must be exhausted and it is time for you to kick back and relax. Can’t wait to meet up with you when you are in Johannesburg again and you can tell us all on Rons Crib about your experience, you truly amaze me. You swam, rode and ran for almost 2 hours! Now I struggle to have the energy to watch a two hour long movie!

Congratulations yet again to our Olympian.

Usain Bolt is the greatest!

Olympics Day 8 - Athletics

Need I say more? What I witnessed in yesterdays Olympic 100 metre final was amazing! I never thought I would live to see the day that an athlete wins what I think is the show piece event of the Olympics, in such style and with such ease. Usain Bolt just showed every single athlete who has ever ran the 100m race how it is done. What made this race so spectacular is that Bolt not only won the race with ease ahead of his competition but he broke the world record and he eased himself to the finish line with time to ’show boat’! If Bolt had kept on running and did not ease off with a couple of metres to go, he would have shed even more time off the world record. + READ MORE

Rons Tri-Nations XV thus far

ronscribtrinations.jpgWith the Tri-Nations taking a break this weekend, I thought it was a good time to sit down and analyse what has happened thus far in the Tri-Nations. I think this is still one of the most wide open Tri-Nations we have seen in a very long time. I guess the South Africa victory in New Zealand which very few expected to happen is what has left this tournament wide open. What really will throw the cat amongst the pigeons is if New Zealand beat South Africa in Cape Town this weekend.

So from the games so far, I am going to name to you what I think has been the best XV so far. I know very few of you will agree with me, but I have tried to be as unbiased as possible and looked at this XV from a rugby fans point of view rather than as a supporter of a particular team: + READ MORE

Rest In Peace Bernie Mac

Comedian Bernie Mac Dies at 50

I was deeply saddened to wake up this morning and hear that Bernie Mac (real name: Bernard Jeffery McCullough) has passed away at the age of 50. The actor and comedian passed away in the early hours of Saturday (9 August 2008) from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital. We have certainly lost a great person. I loved watching Bernie Mac, I think one of the best movies I saw him act in was “Guess Who” with Ashton Kutcher. Bernie Mac’s career began with a small role in “Mo’ Money” in 1992. Mac went on to appear in the “Ocean’s 11″ films with Brad Pitt and George Clooney,”Bad Santa,” “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” and other films.

Mac was also a great stand up comedian. Apparently his first standup performance was at a church dinner when he was 8, and he began doing standup at clubs in Chicago at 20. My all time favourite with Bernie Mac must be “The Original Kings of Comedy” with co-stars, Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley and Cedric the Entertainer. Now that was funny!

I would like to pass on my condolences to Bernie’s family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May his Soul Rest In peace.

Grolsch is bubbly

ronsbar11.jpgHello Hello. Need I say more? It is that day again. After a long hard week of work, it is time to finally switch of your computer for the next two days and forget about work! I will be brief today in Rons Bar as I know time is of the essence, especially on a Friday. Today I will be looking at the beer that seems to have taken South Africa by storm. There is currently a lot of buzz in the liquor stores and pubs about this Dutch beer with a ‘funny’ top. I am talking about Grolsch. Now the first thing that strikes anyone who sees this beer for the first time is the unique ’swingtop’ on the bottle. The first time I saw it I thought, is this a bottle of champagne due to this top it has? I know a lot of people who are just buying this beer just so they can ‘pop’ the cork. It is rather fun I must say opening a bottle of Grolsch! + READ MORE
