This is my third winter in Cape Town and it seems to be getting worse as each year goes on! Having experienced Johannesburg winters and thought that those were some of the worst winters ever, I now have to change my opinion and opt for Cape Town winters being worse than Johannesburg. Yes, Johannesburg winters are much colder temperature wise, with temperatures getting into the negatives but the Cape Town winter sucks because of the rain. It has been raining in Cape Town every single day for the past two weeks!
What really gets me going about the Cape Town weather is when you watch the weather four day weather forecast on the news. On Day 1 you will see a cold from hitting Cape Town from the west then you see a graphic saying 80% rain over Cape Town. They then move onto Day 2 and you can see the cold front moving past Cape Town and the rain graphic changes to 50% but on the far left of the screen you can see another cold front coming! So on Day 3 that second cold front would have landed and with it 80% rain. Move onto Day 4 and you think that the second cold front has gone but alas there will be a third cold front on its way! There should just be a permanent cold front over Cape Town!
Now from where I stay in Big Bay on the west coast, you can actually see the cold front coming from the Atlantic Ocean. It is aesthetically pleasing to the eye seeing a cold front make land fall. The way the sky just turns from blue to grey to black. But I do not care about how beautiful this feat of nature looks because all it is doing is bringing trouble and unpleasant times. Now because of this winter, everyone seems to have a cold or the flu. I am not an exception. I had a terrible flu last week which really is an inconvenience more than anything else as you can not get much productive work done. Not to mention that going out for a drink or a round of golf has become virtually impossible now. All one wants to do is tuck under the duvet with a cup of something hot and watch TV.
I always say to myself that if I could, I would never want to see winter ever again in my life. I would stay in Cape Town when it is summer and when winter sets in like it is now, I would migrate to Europe and enjoy the sun in Spain or Greece. When winter starts to set in there, I would return to Cape Town in time for the beginning of summer.
So now I am in a quandary; do I stay and brave the rainy winter in Cape Town or I move up north to Johannesburg? Johannesburg will be much colder than Cape Town but at least there is no rain. I spent many winters in Johannesburg and I think I got used to them but I just have not gotten to grips with this Cape Town winter so therefore it maybe time to say goodbye to Cape Town, I will see you in summer! How I wish I could go to Spain instead!
